The decision to make The Characteristics of C-Minor wasn’t easy. J.Ollie Lucks already knew parts of Nick Knox’s history, and approached him with the idea of making a short documentary to tell his harrowing story. After heavy contemplation on whether or not to expose certain past events to the world, Nick decided to go ahead. Co-directors Miranda Bellamy and Ollie pitched the story to the BBC. Funding came through in May 2013, and the first day of filming followed soon after.
The delicate subject matter required a gentle approach. Miranda and Ollie filmed over seven hours of interviews with Nick, drawing him out slowly and approaching the really difficult moments with care.
At first, it was confronting for Nick to see his history laid bare on the screen. However, the process of making the film has been ultimately cathartic. The first lines of the film ask: “What was Nick like, before he changed?” Nick’s difficult past has now been brought into the public light of day, and shown for what it is: a part of him, but not the totality.
Filming wrapped in December 2013, and The Characteristics of C-Minor premiered on 23 February on BBC Knowledge. The film was then heavily re-cut, incorporating new footage. The result is a new Director’s Cut which is currently making the global festival circuit.
